Process Paper
We chose the topic of Formation of the Labor Unions for a few reasons. First of all, it is a great representation of this year's theme of Rights and Responsibilities in multiple ways. Second, it is an interesting topic with causes and effects in many areas, such as politics, legal history, the industrial revolution, and women's rights. Lastly, it is not a common topic and it is not likely that someone else will have used it, nor that students will know very much about it, and we wanted to learn more about it. This is why we chose this project idea.
We conducted most of our research on the internet. To make sure data was accurate, we checked multiple sources that contained information on the same subject and cross-checked the information. Our topic did not have too many primary sources, so we have very few of those, but to make up for that, we tried to find many secondary sources that we believe cover the information that otherwise may be available from primary sources. We looked for many hours trying to find a lot of information, and then more hours to condense that information into less than 1200 words for the website.
We chose a website mainly for a few reasons. When we came up with our project idea, we decided we either wanted to do a documentary or an exhibit, and we decided to choose documentary. After making lots of progress on research and starting a script, we realized we could not meet up enough times to edit video clips and record audio. Also, we had trouble finding sources of video on our topic. So we decided we would change to our second option, a website. Since we had most of the information, we just needed to put it into paragraphs instead of script form. Another reason we felt comfortable changing is because some of us had made a website last year, and were comfortable with how Weebly worked.
The main way that this topic has to do with the theme is with Rights. Specifically, the rights of the worker to have a safe work environment, good wages, manageable work hours etc. But this topic fits in another, more subtle way. This is the Responsibility of the employers, to provide that safety, and those shorter hours and better wages. Another Responsibility of the employer is to actually listen to the demands of the worker. These responsibilities were not put into effect, therefore the workers did not have their rights. In these ways, our project fits both rights and responsibilities in history.
